hi! I was looking at Android's Nearby Explorer, by APH.. has anyone used this? How did you like it? I am interested, but it's a LOT of money! Is it better than Walkie-Talkie?

I have it and use it over the google maps. Now here is why: this app can use a different TTS other then talkback, tell you what is around you when your in transit or walking. Its acricy is almost frightening, sometimes it can pen point a location almost to the door. This app uses on board maps that are downloaded an google maps to navigate a user via voice guide. You can see what is being read via talkback while the other TTS is reading out your directions. It even integrates with google now because it is able to be select as the system map GPS.

Is it worth the $99 price tag? It just sounds like a lot of money...
Does it work with Android ICS?

I can not promise it works with ICS because its been about two years sense I used ICs. I can say yes its worth its price tag.

I'm strongly considering buying Nearby explorer. However, I have a question. I will be getting a new phone at some point in the future, possibly this year. If I bought it now and put it on my phone, how would I transfer it to the new phone without having to by the application all over again? I've had to redownload all my applications, since switching phones about a month and a half ago now. I didn't have any paid ones, but still, I dont' know how this works with paid ones. I thought Google saved your applications you downloaded so that you could simply redownload them, when you got a new device.
Thanks,
Dawnielle

That's my experience. I've had phone problems, and have had to re-download the programs onto new phones. It's synced to your google profile, so if you use your gmail address you should be fine, even with a paid ap, unless Nearby Explorer is designed to not transfer.

It is worth its price tag... can I run it with MA as my TTS engine? I prefer the MA voices.

no, vocalizer is a lisens TTS so it would use another TTS you have installed. Try acapela, its quite responsive sounds human like.

Post 14 by starfly (99956) on Wednesday, 12-Mar-2014 18:08:52

OK, so I bought an acapela voice... yay! Going to take the plunge and buy Nearby Explorer this weekend; Does the program download the 3GB worth of maps? Cuz I certainly don't have 3GB worth of data on my monthly plan...

Post 16 by starfly (99956) on Friday, 14-Mar-2014 17:03:02

yes you must download the maps. Just use wyfi if you have it at yyour place.

OK, so I will wait until I get home and load up the maps. I have all tomorrow morning to see how it works in a familiar area.

Kate, who plunked down $99 on this and hopes it's as good as you say!

Oh it is, I have guided cab drivers with it to eateries and back home. You will like the G,O Beam feature, it will tell you as your traveling or just standing there and holding your device in land scape mode, move around slowly and you will here what is around you.

First impressions:

YES, Use Wifi to load the maps! It's 3GB of data, so very very large! It took my phone about 7.5hrs to download the maps, which is the only drawback I have seen. Took it for a spin this morning, and while I think I have a bit of learning to do with it, it seems pretty intuitive. Told me all kinds of things near my house, even though for some reason it wouldn't recognize the McDonald's.

Overall, I do really like this ap, and think that it will be worth its ticket price once I tweak my own settings.

Kate

P.s. what's this Geobeam?

Post 20 by starfly (99956) on Saturday, 15-Mar-2014 17:20:38

Geobeam allows you to turn your phone in land scape and then slowly point it in different directions. It will then tell you businesses around you.

That sounds cool. It sucks you can't keep it in portrait mode, though. I have my phone set to stay in portrait mode.

Post 22 by starfly (99956) on Thursday, 27-Mar-2014 17:36:50

That does not matter, G O-beem will still work in landscape.
